The PS 254 Music Program is musically immersive, sequentially structured, and developmentally tuned, providing students with a rich, joyful, and comprehensive journey in music-making. In our dynamic music classroom, students engage in a broad symphony of musical explorations, including vocal artistry, rhythmic fluency, instrumental technique, musical literacy, expressive movement, digital composition, and creative improvisation.

All students receive music instruction at least once a week, with each year’s learning orchestrated to build upon prior musical understanding, ensuring a smooth and meaningful progression from grade to grade.

Our curriculum offers multiple entry points, ensuring every child—regardless of experience—can access, explore, and thrive musically. Students acquire foundational and advanced skills in rhythm, melody, harmony, form, and notation through active music-making, kinesthetic engagement, collaborative ensemble work, and creative exploration. They also develop expressive tools to communicate mood, narrative, and personal voice through dynamic contrast, tempo variation, and interpretive decision-making.

The music room serves as a space for musical inquiry, collaboration, and identity-building. Students are encouraged to think critically, solve artistic challenges, and engage in meaningful teamwork. Through choral singing, instrumental ensembles, and cooperative projects, they develop both musicianship and social-emotional fluency, gaining confidence and ownership of their musical growth.

Throughout the school year, student performances and original compositions are showcased across the school community, honoring both the creative process and artistic achievement. Our program is aligned with the New York City Blueprint for Teaching and Learning in Music and the New York State Learning Standards for the Arts.

PS 254 also proudly collaborates with renowned partners such as Carnegie Hall’s Music Explorers Program, Music and the Brain, and other professional arts organizations to expand students’ musical horizons and provide access to authentic, world-class music experiences.
